Grey skies in the Bluegrass State

Updated: Nov 6

In the fall, I normally enjoy an annual outing to the Ohio Renaissance Faire (and yes, we go in garb 😜). But unfortunately it wasn’t in the cards this year, and suddenly I found myself with a free Saturday.

A free Saturday?

I had a backup plan: the Log House Gallery in Berea, Kentucky was hosting their first Plein Aire competition Saturday, luckily, as a single day event. So, off I trekked the three and half hours down to The Bluegrass State. I left at midnight out of fear of over sleeping so I arrived at 4am, and in appropriate Meghan fashion, nerves over competing had me too awake for a car nap. So while I waited for check-in hours, I warmed up by testing out some nocturne efforts for the first time. And I have to say it was actually fun! More night scenes are certainly on my radar. The gallery employed a really neat tool for thier event; utilizing google maps to layout a boundary line of sorts. And it really helped to reduce the decision fatigue I seem to easily suffer from. So the task of finding my subject went a little quicker. Definitely putting that tool in my toolbox of ideas if the Logan County Art League ever winds up hosting an event.

The big bummer of the day was that the weather was not ideal. I am not experienced enough to know how to deal with overcast skies, which absolutely stole any light source and dramatic cast shadows that I feel like I typically rely on. I was pretty disappointed with my results, but did the best I could with what I had in front of me. It still was enough to get me an honorable mention again.
